I know that at this point and after 2 years this is almost impossible, but why not bring back WoL and HotS ladders or an unranked matchmaking system?
But here’s one great side effect: the zerg-themed campaign in StarCraft II: Heart of the Swarm is something more ambitious than simply more of the same of what we got in ‘s Wings of Liberty. Blizzard takes some risks with the formula to put zerg Queen Sarah Kerrigan in a real leading role, and enough of them pay off that this expansion is a great reminder of why a big, mission expansion can be more rewarding than a drip-feed of small DLC add-ons.
Blizzard can still put out an excellent real-time strategy campaign that isn’t just more of the same. Kerrigan’s vengeful rampage may come with a generous helping of cheese and some tedious boss fights, but the chance to play with increasingly powerful units and abilities makes up for a lot — as does some inventive mission design and greater-than-average replayabilty appeal.
Only time will tell if the multiplayer changes are truly improvements, but finding out will be a good time. StarCraft II — Zerg. Verdict Blizzard can still put out an excellent real-time strategy campaign that isn’t just more of the same.

I have been mulling this around in my head, the possibility of doing some SC2 while waiting for the announcement of Dawn of War 3 and I really hope soon. Has the player base mostly ditched it for MOBA’s? And I heard tell of Blizzard making the game not very fun after their last round of patches.
At the moment, Blizzard is putting the finishing touches on Starcraft II: Heart of the Swarm, an expansion that will focus on Sarah Kerrigan and.
For hundreds of thousands of people StarCraft 2 is an ultra hardcore competitive multiplayer game built for eSports and little else. For them playing and hopefully winning ranked matches is all that matters. But, according to Blizzard, just as many fans of the real-time strategy game suffer from what it dubs “ladder anxiety” – that is, they want to play competitively against other players online but are intimidated by the prospect and so don’t. It is this “ladder anxiety” that the gargantuan PC developer hopes Heart of the Swarm, the first expansion for StarCraft 2, will combat.
He continued: “Ladder anxiety is something that’s come from the community. They say, ‘every time I go into the game I’m so nervous about whether I’m going to go up or down in bronze or silver or gold. If you look back to where you were, when you didn’t even know how to block off the ramp to your base or get enough workers to get you enough income to build, to you progressing past that, that doesn’t have to happen on a ladder with everyone seeing your ranking.
To combat this Blizzard has introduced a raft of new features designed to encourage players to give ranked a shot.
The expansion includes additional units and multiplayer changes from Wings of Liberty , as well as a continuing campaign focusing on the Zerg race and following Sarah Kerrigan in her effort to regain control of the swarm and exact her revenge on the Terran Dominion’s emperor, Arcturus Mengsk. During BlizzCon , Blizzard announced that StarCraft II would be re-branded as a free-to-play game, hence opening the multiplayer mode to everybody and bringing some changes to previously paid features of the game.
However, those who had already bought Wings of Liberty before the free-to-play announcement were gifted the Heart of the Swarm campaign free of charge. This new free-to-play model and changes to the availability of the campaigns was in line with Blizzard’s vision to support the game differently going forward. Heart of the Swarm features a single-player campaign with 20 missions plus seven evolution missions which allow the player to upgrade units , and continues the story from Wings of Liberty.

First off I thought I would try an skirmish match against the AI which I tried to set up through the Custom Games menu, this left me face to face with a list of online matches to join, after a bit of clicking around I found the option to set up a skirmish against the AI. However, this was with my old mouse and I soon gave up any pretence of being able to play something like StarCraft with a ballsed-up mouse.
But this does make me with the menus were a little bit clearer with possibly an option for Skirmish and a separate option for Join a Match to go along with the Matchmaking menu. Lo and behold, it seems like Kerrigan has had an evil moment and possibly hooked up with Raynor since I was last involved in what seems to have become a soap-opera in space. Needless to say, I was a little bit taken aback at how out of touch I was with the story in the StarCraft games, but I was soon able to get into the swing of things and taking charge of Kerrigan and her Zerg.
Although I am extremely out of touch with the story, I am picking up bits and pieces to help understand what is happening during the various cut-scenes and the pre-game moments where Kerrigan can talk to her Zerg advisors and make modifications to various units. First impressions are that this is a good way to develop the story and to add some role-playing elements to a RTS title.

Starcraft II: Heart of the Swarm picks up where Wings of liberty left off with the first few missions dealing with Jim Raynor and the ex-Queen of Blades, newly back to human form, Sarah Kerrigan trying to escape from the planet Char. As well as the continuing story line, Heart of the Swarm brings some graphical enhancements and upgrades such as a nastier looking Zerg Creep, slicker front end game menus and new units for each race.
One nice add is that gather units automatically start harvesting when a game starts instead of having to be commanded to do so. Raynor gets a neon underlight upgrade…. It is full of very serious players that strive to constantly improve playing techniques just to shave micro seconds off production times to gain an advantage over their opponents.
The Wings of Liberty campaign was made completely free while the campaigns for Heart of the Swarm and Legacy of the Void still required payment. However.
For example, Void Rays in matches played with Wings of Liberty selected will still have their focused damage increase. In Heart of the Swarm, this was removed and replaced with an ability. For playing with friends who only have Wings of Liberty, you can leave your expansion level on Heart of the Swarm. When you are in a party with someone who doesn’t have Heart of the Swarm, it will have an icon in the party chat beside their name saying that they only have Wings of Liberty.

I don’t know about the more experienced commanders out there, but my fun in StarCraft II relies a lot on whether or not I’m satisfied with the feng shui of my barracks placement relative to my base’s refinery. Such a quirk usually doesn’t bode well for me against humans, but I may find enough time and space to fuss over the spiritual alignment of my buildings in peace in Heart of the Swarm’s new Training and Versus AI modes. Part of Blizzard’s intention in its redesign of matchmaking is striking a balance between catering to grizzled StarCraft II warhorses and helping fledgling players grasp the fundamentals.
In Swarm, Versus AI mode now automatically picks what difficulty is right for me after I complete initial placement matches. Training gets even more basic, showing players the ropes of basic army and base construction techniques. Unranked mode sets up matches against similarly skilled players sans the added pressure of ladder standings. Ranked play remains as it did in Wings of Liberty—competitive, aggressive, and something I’m deathly afraid of stepping foot in.
