Matchmaking

We understand that some players, especially at the high end, have experienced a significant drop in matchmaking quality as a result of our recent iterations. We are committed to making matchmaking as good as it can be. For any party that includes an Immortal player, every player in that party will be considered the same rank as the highest player in that party. We think this trade-off is worthwhile at this high level, however, because matches are unlikely to be of high quality anyways with extremely disparate skill levels within a party given the shallow pool available. Such disparity has often made the games less fun for most players involved. We expect that this will have the net effect of reducing the number of party games at the highest skill levels by some amount, but compared to how infrequent high-MMR party games were in the past, the number of party games should still be higher than the historical average. For any five-player party, they will now only be matched against other five-player parties, regardless of any other matchmaking consideration. We are unsure if an absolute requirement like this will result in net higher quality matchmaking due to the more limited opponent spectrum available in that case, but we know this is an aspect the community talks about often and we are going to do our best to work within those constraints. Similarly, any solo player will now only ever be considered for matches against at most one party of two.

Is Solo MMR somehow being considered in party rank games as well? Edit: ok This should be the reason:

Strict matchmaking is a setting that allows solo players to only queue into games against other solo players when play in ranked playlists. Players often choose to enable this kind of matchmaking to avoid loading into games with parties. In the game, parties receive bonus MMR to compensate for the coordination they receive from working together, with all skill and experience values aggregated together.

This leads to many players wanting to just play with other solo-queued grinders, due to partied players sometimes having a different level of motivation to their solo teammates. Valve believe this choice-based separation of players entering into games alone or partied up has seen a spike in matchmaking times, as well as a reduction in the overall balance of skill in games, and are testing to see if the two are linked.

I will still test it out, but I’m afraid solo queue might just be dead for me and a lot of others going forward. One group that will enjoy the change, however, is regular partied players. If matchmaking queues do rise, not many will complain about quicker queue times for the foreseeable future. Dota 2. Dota 2 fans can rest easy when queuing up for matches now because Valve has added strict solo matchmaking back into the client after months of updating the regular fast queue. This comes months after the developers began testing the feature as a toggleable option in the client to help improve long wait time for matches, which has been one of the main complaints around the game since Valve began experimenting with new options. Originally, Valve decided that solo queue was a detrimental aspect to the matchmaking system because it led to so many solo players being thrown into matches against teams with players actually working together to win.

The developer hoped that removing that option would allow other players to be evenly distributed in fairer instances, but it actually hurt queue times by making them much longer. Those long wait times have improved as more updates have come to the game and continued to iterate on the original idea, but this addition should cut those times down again.

This option is only available for the fast queue games, however, not any other mode or type of matchmaking.

For a long time, Dota 2 only had the MMR value, but brought in the ranks to give the players a stronger reference, self-fulfillment and of course a bigger reason to climb higher on the ladder!

Your MMR will have a huge impact on to your game quality: The goal is to find the suitable skill rank you really have, so that Dota 2 can match you with equal skilled players into a maximum balanced game. That means MMR decides about your teammates and enemies. Most of you will have experienced that when you are playing with friends who have a completely different MMR higher or lower then the queue time is much higher. The Dota 2 algorithm has to find the right mix for a balanced and suitable game.

However, sometimes the algorithm faces some unexpected unfairness, and it ultimately leads an average of MMR team players to play with an average MMR team to reach an equal amount of MMR in total.
